Azrael, also known as Jean-Paul Valley, is a complex figure within the DC Comics universe. His first appearance was in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (October 1992).
Bred and mentally conditioned by the Order of St. Dumas, a secret religious organization, Valley was designed to be their enforcer. He initially believed he was an ordinary college student before his father's death activated his programmed persona.
As Azrael, Valley possesses enhanced strength, speed, and agility. However, his programming also makes him prone to violent tendencies and mental instability. He briefly replaced Bruce Wayne as Batman after Bane broke Batman's back, adopting a more brutal and extreme approach to crimefighting.
While later relinquishing the Batman mantle, Azrael has continued to operate as a vigilante, struggling against the Order of St. Dumas' influence and seeking redemption for his past actions.
